Glossary - Moving to Germany during the year

Expatriate moving to Germany during the year are obliged to file a tax return. The assessment period is the calendar year (1st January – 31st December). Generally, the foreign income earned before moving to Germany is treated as tax free income. However, this income is considered under the so-called progression clause and therefore influences the tax rate in Germany.
